Prototype Review

Prototype is a hack-n-slash title developed by Radical Entertainment, which is also the same studio that created The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction on the Game Cube, PlayStation 2, and Xbox. Published by Activision, this sandbox style game is a single player only action game with a rating restricted to audiences of mature 18+.

Your Character and Supporting Characters

Your character is Alex Mercer. Alex starts off with a very bad day at the beginning of the game. About to be autopsied by two guys, Alex wakes up confused with no memory of whom he was or how he landed on a morgue slab.

This is how Alex Mercer's story of revenge begins; he spends the whole game trying to find out who he was and what happened to him. Anyone that gets in the way of him and the truth suffer the consequences gruesomely. You meet other characters throughout the game, such as Alex's sister, but you really do not care about them because the characters are not really fleshed out that well. They come and go throughout the story to get you where the plot line needs you. For the most part, like a mist that comes and goes, they are forgettable.

The Story

The story takes place in New York. It does not really feel like you're in New York because there are no landmarks to reveal that you're actually there. The environment is a little bland and there are limited varieties in locations. Fortunately, Prototype is not about where you are, but rather it's about causing a lot of destruction and having a whole lot of fun in the process. Throughout the game, you are traveling from point A to point B trying to get what Alex needs to advance the plot line.

Prototype is very unique in a way that Alex collects information by consuming people. By consuming, I mean by killing people and then absorbing their bodies into your character. If you choose not to consume people, your health will still regenerate, but sluggishly. Consuming restores Alex's life and helps him find the information he needs. The information is entangled in a structure called the Web of Intrigue, and once a person is consumed, Alex has the ability to recall their memories which could either be true or false. Your mission in this captivating game is to discover what and why it happened.

Another great feature of consumption, although optional, is being able to shape shift your identity, making sneaking around a piece of cake. Or, if you want action, you can go in guns blazing which is my preference most of the time. This is where prototype shines because missions can be tackled in many different ways.

Combat System

The combat system is very intuitive and you can choose your abilities from a wheel that allows you to progressively gain powers over the course of the game. A cool aspect about Prototype is that the game goes into a Max Pain like slow motion (also known as slow-mo) when you're choosing an ability. This feature allows you to take your time without feeling rushed.

I'm sure Radical Entertainment chose to go with the slow-mo feature because there are a lot of enemies on screen coming at you at once, and believe me, trying to choose between different powers would have been very frustrating if the game was still going.

Speaking of enemies onscreen, they are more than competent, always keeping you engaged in the game. It is a lot better than some artificial intelligence (also known as AI) I have seen in other games. You will encounter a few different types of enemy, but not many. The weapons in the game are your standard guns. There is nothing there that really stays out. Alex abilities are the star of the show here.

As for abilities, your character can transform into having claws like Wolverine from the X-Men, a tentacle arm, shield, huge blade the size of a small car, and big metal plated arms. Alex also has the ability to change the composition of his body resulting in his arms becoming huge, or transforming his entire body into armor. Alex can run up walls, which I personally think is pretty fun, and glide for short distances. Your abilities are upgradeable as you acquire orbs. Almost everything you do in the game is connected to orbs; this is a great feature because there are some many abilities that it may seem a bit overwhelming at times trying to remember the entire button sequences.

In the End

In the end, Prototype is better than the sum of its parts. If you enjoy a lot of action, gore, and chaos, then Prototype just might be the game you're looking for!!
